　　建于1314，位于牛津城的市中心。牛津最古老的学院之一，建筑紧凑别致，牛津城的书店大多集中于该学院所在的高街和宽街(High Street and Broad Street)。住宿条件较好。艾克赛特学院的学术条件非常棒，毕业生中出过很多名人。在艾克赛特学院毕业的学生中可能最为中国人所熟知的就是就是《指环王》的作者托尔金和钱钟书先生。

　　约翰·罗纳德·瑞尔·托尔金，(John Ronald Reuel Tolkien，1892年1月3日—1973年9月2日)，一般简称为J.R.R.托尔金。牛津大学教授，古英语专家。童年家境窘迫，12岁时成了孤儿。1911年到牛津大学的埃克塞学院学习古英语、日耳曼语系、威尔士语与哥特语，显示出令人瞩目的语言学天才。一次大战中赴法参战，后因病回国。曾在里兹大学、牛津大学任教，1959年退休。托尔金的著作不多，1937年出版《霍比特人》，其后又耗时16年完成了魔幻小说巨著《魔戒三部曲》，获得极大的成功。1973年9月托尔金去世，与妻子合葬在牛津北郊的一个公墓里。

　　而1935年，钱钟书先生以第一名成绩(87.95分)考取英国庚子赔款公费留学生，赴英国牛津大学埃克塞特学院英文系留学。学成归国后著就《围城》经典一书，被书评家夏志清先生称为“中国近代文学中最有趣、最用心经营的小说，可能是最伟大的一部”。这位对中国现代文学做出卓越贡献的文坛泰斗钱钟书，也是“牛津出品”。

　　非常有趣的是他们都是语言天才，钱钟书除了精通中文，还会英语，德语，法语，西班牙语，拉丁文，意大利语

　　而托尔金不但精通多种语言，在《指环王》中还自创了一种“精灵语”
